Stories Index > Death of a newspaper

On Dec. 4, 2008, Colorado's oldest newspaper, the Rocky Mountain News, was put up for sale by corporate owner E. W. Scripps. It was a victim of the economic crisis that began in 2008 and a more general collapse of traditional advertising-supported media in an internet age. Rocky staffers and concerned readers launched an effort to prove the paper still had market support in Denver and Colorado, through the website IWantMyRocky.com - but to no avail. The Rocky published its final edition one year ago, on Feb 27, 2009.
